Description
‘How Dark The Days Got’
Original mixed media painting on canvas.
100cm x 100cm unframed.
Created using a combination of acrylic paint, texture mediums, and pastels.
Fallen twigs and branches everywhere, trees growing twisted and sideways, the deep mulch beneath my feet as everything that has fallen decays,
Bare, raw, bitter and dark,
Depression sinks all of my energy, yet the cyclical seasons remind me everything renews,
Growth will always come eventually
This year my artwork has become heavily led by the seasonal changes around me. As my inspiration has become more and more attuned to my direct experience of nature, I’ve felt myself grow more and more emotionally connected to the painting process. I believe the outcome is my most authentic, organic and energetic work yet. Each time I step out into nature, I take great care to notice the colours, the textures, the smells and the energy of the places I visit throughout the year. Absorbing all of this incredible beauty everyday grounds me and gives me hope and perspective even when life has felt difficult and disordered. So these paintings don’t only communicate my experience of nature throughout the seasons, but also my personal experience and undulating emotions during that time period.
‘How Dark The Days Got’ was painted in the winter during January 2025. Inspired by the lichen and messy forest floor from all the stormy weather, the painting communicates my experience of nature in winter as well as the emotions that accompanied that time period. It is a visual manifestation of mood, texture, energy, sound, vibration. Everything you can’t see thrown onto the canvas creating a tangible representation of the sensations felt during its creation.
